AKHS Band wins Festival Disney! (added 4/12)

On April 3-5, seventy-one AK Band students (and eight wonderful chaperones) traveled down to Orlando to compete in the Festival Disney music competition. Performing at the festival were the Jazz Band and a combined Symphonic Band made up of students from all three AK concert bands.  Each group was adjudicated by some of the top college music educators and professional conductors in the country.

Competing for the first time in school history, the AK Jazz Band received an Excellent rating, which is the second highest rating possible and placed 2nd in the Jazz Band division. The AK combined Symphonic Band received a Superior rating, which is the highest rating possible, and took home the 1st place trophy (a Golden Mickey) for winning the Concert Band division as the highest scoring overall band at the festival!

Two AK students were also recognized for their individual efforts. Scott Rawls was awarded Outstanding Soloist for the Jazz Band division on Alto Sax, and Katherine Kellogg was awarded Outstanding Soloist for the Concert Band division on piccolo. Congratulations to Mr. Shane and to all of the AK band students for representing Ardrey Kell so well at Festival Disney!

Ardrey Kell Bands are Superior! (added 3/21)

Earlier this month, both the Ardrey Kell HS Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble participated in the North Carolina State Concert Band Assessment held at Shelby HS. Both bands were evaluated by three state appointed judges performing a prepared concert of three songs each. After the prepared concert, the bands were then judged on sight-reading, where they had five minutes to look over and then perform a song that they had never seen before.

With two great performances, both the AK Symphonic Band and the AK Wind Ensemble each received an overall “Superior” rating, which is the highest rating possible that a band can receive from the judges at State Assessment. These very prestigious scores, makes Ardrey Kell one of only 3 high schools in CMS to have multiple bands score “Superiors” at the concert assessment. Congratulations to all members of both AKHS Bands for two great performances at State!

You can here recordings of each band's performance on our Audio page by clicking here.

Winter Guard finishes 2008 season (added 4/2)

This past Saturday, the Ardrey Kell Winter Guard finished their 2008 season with a performance at the CWEA Winter Guard Championships held at the Winthrop University gym. With their best show of the year, the AK Guard finished in 5th place in their class, just 1 tenth behind 4th place and 2 tenths behind 3rd place and a medal. Overall, the guard placed 11th out of 60 winter guards from both North and South Carolina and was the highest scoring winter guard from a CMS school.

This year was a historic year that saw the AK Guard getting moved up to a higher class not once, but two different times during the season due to their strong performances and their ability level. Congratulations to the entire team for a great 2008 season!

AK color guard tryouts for next year will be held during the week of April 21st. Stay tuned to the announcements for more details!
